What’s a terpene?
Terpenes are a chemical compound that gives plants their smell and flavor. Terpenes are found everywhere in nature — pine trees, fruit, herbs — and they can also be created synthetically (something you’ll never see us do).
Terpenes are also found in the cannabis plant, and they have a big influence on your experience. While THC is responsible for creating a high, the terpenes that THC is paired with drive the overall experience of your high — for example, whether or not you feel uplifted and energetic versus relaxed and sleepy.
A higher percentage of terpenes can even lead to a better high. Of two strains with equal THC, it’s reported time and time again that the one with a higher percentage of terpenes leads to a more intense and better experience. This is connected to a concept in cannabis called the Entourage Effect.
What’s the Entourage Effect?
The Entourage Effect refers to the concept that all the compounds in cannabis, including cannabinoids and terpenes, create stronger effects when used together.
This means that higher terpene percentages = a stronger and better high.
How to chase terps, not just THC
As dedicated Terp Chasers ourselves, we always look for flower that has at least 2% terpenes.
Generally speaking, anything between 18-26% THC + 3% terpenes will create a full, flavorful, and rich experience — both in the taste and your high.
If we see 30% THC and under 1% terpenes, we avoid it like the plague.
