What is THC?

When people think of marijuana, they often first think of the “high” that is associated with it. This is not completely unfair; marijuana can be an intoxicant, offering feelings of euphoria or making someone feel drowsy. The chemical component that is most responsible for the feeling is Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.

This compound works, in part, by mimicking the effects of anandamide and 2-AG in the human body. These are two neurotransmitters that are produced naturally by the body and help to regulate sleeping and eating habits, the perception of pain, and countless other bodily functions. These neurotransmitters represent another function of the endocannabinoid system, which may play a larger role in human health then medical professionals previously thought. As the medicinal cannabis industry evolves, more time and study is being devoted to this vital part of the body.

THC can be consumed in a number of ways, primarily through inhalation and through ingestion orally. This allows the industry to create medicinals for vape pens, edibles, and oils, as well as buds of the marijuana plant for smoking.

The benefits of THC include:

  • Relaxation

  • Altered senses of sight, smell, and hearing

  • Hunger

  • Reduced aggression

As such THC is often used to help in the treatment of cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, digestive pain and disorders, and inflammation. THC may also be a powerful tool in the treatment of several psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and hyperactive disorders.

Thanks to the advances in medical science and the continued research into the medical marijuana field, the benefits of THC continue to be discovered.
